Person killed in suspected suicide at Beltrum railroad crossing

Those in the Netherlands in life threatening danger should immediately dial 112 for emergencies, and anyone suffering from depression or contemplating suicide can call 113 Zelfmoordpreventie at any time by dialing either 113 or 0800-0113, or by visiting 113.nl.

A fatal collision occurred Friday evening between a passenger car and a train at a railroad crossing on Nijkampsweg in Beltrum, in the Achterhoek region. According to ProRail, the incident is being treated as a suspected suicide.

According to AD, the crash took place shortly after 10:00 p.m. on the railway line connecting Winterswijk and Zutphen. No injuries were reported among those on the train.

Rail traffic was suspended following the accident and resumed Saturday morning.

The site of the crash has a history of serious accidents. On Sunday, March 23, 2025, a lone driver was killed in a collision with a train at the same crossing.

In another incident on Saturday, March 5, 2022, a train collided with a cart that had become stuck on the tracks. The cart was successfully detached from its tractor before the crash, and no one was injured, though significant damage occurred.

Authorities reminded the public that support is available for those contemplating suicide or concerned about someone at risk. Confidential help can be accessed via chat at 113.nl or by phone at 113 or 0800-0113.
