Detainee dies overnight in Breda police cell; Investigation launched
A detainee died early Saturday inside a police station in Breda, authorities confirmed after initial reporting by Omroep Brabant. The death occurred during the night from Friday to Saturday and immediately prompted an investigation by the Rijksrecherche, the independent national agency that reviews serious incidents involving police.
Police said they do not yet know what happened inside the station, why the person had been detained, or any confirmed details about the detainee’s identity. A spokesperson added that the Rijksrecherche is now leading the inquiry, adding that “it is customary when a detainee dies.”
The Rijksrecherche operates under the Public Prosecution Service and examines incidents involving the use of firearms or other serious force by police, as well as cases that could undermine government integrity, including suspected bribery of civil servants.
A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service said there was no additional information yet.
