Major maintenance this weekend at Amsterdam rail stations; Crowding, delays expected

ProRail will perform maintenance simultaneously at three key Amsterdam stations this weekend: Amsterdam Central, Schiphol Airport, and Amsterdam Zuid. Consequently, passengers can expect crowded conditions on platforms, trains, and metros, with ProRail advising that travel times could be extended by up to approximately 30 minutes.

Between November 15 and December 7, only three of the six tracks around Schiphol will be in use due to maintenance. As a result, there will be far fewer trains serving the airport.

This coming weekend, at the height of the maintenance work, trains between Schiphol and Amsterdam Central or Amsterdam Zuid may operate only in one direction, or may not run at all. Passengers are advised to consider alternative routes, such as taking the metro or rerouting via other stations.

Work at Schiphol includes milling or replacing rails, refurbishing switches, and occasionally substituting block tracks with prefabricated track structures to ensure long-term durability of the rail infrastructure. Station amenities such as benches, trash bins, and information panels are also being renewed.

Platform extensions are underway at Amsterdam Zuid to accommodate the upcoming station passage, enabling longer trains to call at the station once completed.

Maintenance at Amsterdam Central is focused on track 7, with some fixed stairs partially closed and escalators turned off, while elevators remain in use. The work requires access to the platform’s entire length.

Passengers are urged to check the latest travel information before departure, for example, via the NS journey planner, to avoid delays or detours.
