Student elections show PVV in the lead, D66 close behind

ProDemos reports that, just like in 2023, the PVV has won the student elections. Geert Wilders’ party took 19.97 percent of the vote, narrowly beating D66, which received 19.5 percent. This would translate to 32 seats for the PVV and 31 for D66, while GroenLinks-PvdA finished third with 10.3 percent, or 16 seats.

The PVV was the biggest party in 2023 as well, receiving 15.8 percent of the votes. Forum voor Democratie, which had over 13 percent in 2023, has dropped to just 3.2 percent this year.

ProDemos highlights the notable support for NL PLAN, which earned 5.5 percent of the vote. The newcomer Vrede voor Dieren also clears the electoral threshold, receiving just under 1 percent.

ProDemos, the House for Democracy and the Rule of Law, organizes nationwide Student Elections for secondary and vocational students ahead of each major election. The initiative was first launched by ProDemos in 1994. This was the 31st edition of the elections.

The organization’s director, Eric Stokkink, was pleased with the turnout. “It’s great to see so many schools and young people taking part in the Student Elections with such enthusiasm. Casting your first vote can be nerve-racking. Who should I vote for, and what if I make a mistake on the ballot? The Student Elections give young people a safe space to practice and build confidence in both themselves and the democratic process. Through this initiative, schools and ProDemos across the Netherlands are helping to nurture the democratic citizens of the future.”

Several politicians attended the student elections. This included Marieke Koekkoek (Volt), Lidewij de Vos (FvD), Henk Vermeer (BBB) en Jan Paternotte (D66). The students were also offered the chance to ask the politicians questions after they had submitted their vote.

According to the organizers, the reported results do not indicate how the Tweede Kamer election on Wednesday will turn out. Over 165,000 pupils and students participated in the vote.

Other polls show the PVV, GroenLinks-PvdA and D66 neck and neck in the polls. Ipsos I&O had the parties tied, with 39 percent of voters still being undecided. The final poll from news magazine broadcast show EenVandaag and research firm Verian has PVV as the largest party, but with significant losses compared to a week ago.
