Maastricht man sentenced to 15 years for setting girlfriend on fire
A 38-year-old man was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison for pouring gasoline over his girlfriend and setting her on fire in Maastricht last year, L1 reports. The court found the attack deliberate and ruled it an attempted murder.
On June 3, 2024, Quintin B. and his 31-year-old girlfriend were drinking vodka with a friend in Maastricht. When B. wanted to leave and she refused, he left, returned 15 minutes later with gasoline and a lighter, and set her ablaze in front of witnesses. He then jumped on her, catching fire himself. Both suffered serious burns. The woman survived with permanent injuries.
“The defendant carried out his intended act with care and determination. It was a well-considered plan,” the court said. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) described the couple’s relationship as “explosive.”
Prosecutors had sought a 15-year sentence and psychiatric treatment under TBS, but the court declined, saying no mental disorder could be proven.
The court noted B.’s violent history, calling his behavior part of a pattern. “He has a contemptuous attitude toward women. The severity of his violence has only increased over the years. He has also shown no remorse,” the judges said.
Through her lawyer, the victim told the court she still suffers from her injuries. “I will never be able to come to terms with it,” she said. “The radiant and determined person I once was, I am no longer.”
