Fire tears through former GGZ building in Drachten

A fire tore through a vacant building in Drachten overnight, according to Omrop Fryslân. The blaze broke out in the former GGZ property on Oudeweg.

A neighbor spotted the flames and alerted the fire brigade. Crews arrived to find a major fire inside the abandoned structure.

Firefighters used multiple engines and an aerial platform to bring the blaze under control.

The building had been empty for some time, police said. Investigators are examining whether arson played a role.
