New trains to launch on Amsterdam-Berlin route beginning Oct. 18; Six hour trips

New trains will start running on the Amsterdam–Berlin route from Saturday, October 18, NS announced. The ICE 3neo trains will also bring back the onboard bar car, where passengers can enjoy coffee and other refreshments.

In the Netherlands, the train will stop at Hilversum, Amersfoort, Apeldoorn, Deventer, and Hengelo. These new trains replace the old ones and, as before, operate seven times a day between the Netherlands and Germany.

Owned by the German rail operator DB, the trains feature the latest technology and are designed for “a comfortable journey,” according to the NS. The same type of train is already used on routes between the Netherlands and Frankfurt and Munich.

Most trips on the Amsterdam–Berlin route will use the new trains from October 18, although an NS spokeswoman said older trains may still run occasionally. The travel time for the trip will remain around six hours.

The new trains have fewer seats than the current ones. “This could especially lead to extra crowding during holiday periods, when this train to Berlin is popular,” the rail operator said. “NS is closely monitoring any potential increase in demand.”
