Dozens of Enschede residents mark the city's 700th anniversary by getting €7 tattoos

Dozens of residents of Enschede commemorated their city’s 700th anniversary by getting tattoos for the price of 7 euros on Tuesday, NOS and RTV Oost reported. The promotional discount was offered by a local tattoo shop.

“The response was huge, and we had to set a maximum. Otherwise it would have been chaos in the shop,” tattoo shop owner Yasin Unal told NOS.

Ostermeier noted that tattoos of this size normally cost between 100 and 150 euros. “It seemed fun to offer it for 7 euros, but it could have just as well been free. The 7, of course, matches the 700-year celebration.”

Tattoo artist and co-owner Yannick Ostermeier added, “If we had made larger designs, we might have only been able to tattoo ten people. Now we were able to give thirty people a new tattoo.”

Customers could choose from designs including the city’s coat of arms, the skyline, or the word “Enschede.” One resident said, “I chose the Enschede gate. I wanted something subtle. So a big ‘Enschede’ felt a bit extreme. This is a good alternative.” Another participant told NOS, “I was born here, I grew up here, and I live here. I will never leave.”
