Two arrested in 1992 cold case murder in The Hague
Police have arrested two men in connection with the unsolved 1992 murder of Louis “Loek” van Dam, who was found shot dead in his garage in The Hague more than three decades ago, police reported.
On August 20, investigators took a 71-year-old man from Overdinkel and a 70-year-old man from The Hague into custody on suspicion of involvement in Van Dam’s death. Both men appeared on Friday, August 22, before the examining magistrate.
The arrests come months after police detained another suspect in March — a 70-year-old man who remains in custody. Authorities have not released the identities of any of the suspects.
Van Dam, 64, was discovered lifeless in his garage on Kritzingerstraat in The Hague on January 28, 1992. He had been shot six times. Police at the time said it was striking that no goods were stolen from his home.
Despite an extensive investigation in 1992, the murder was never solved. Three suspects were initially arrested that year, but all were released due to a lack of evidence.
The case was later highlighted through the national cold case calendar, which features unsolved serious crimes. In 2022, new information reportedly reached police, prompting a fresh investigation.
Although three suspects are now in custody, detectives emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing.
Authorities continue to seek tips, witnesses, and any additional information that could help solve the murder. A 30,000 euros reward remains available for the “golden tip” that leads to resolution of the case.
Police urged the public to come forward: “It is never too late to talk.” Information can be shared with the investigation team via the national tip line at 0800-6070 or through the online tip form. Anonymous tips can be reported through Meld Misdaad Anoniem at 0800-7000.
