A 64-year-old man from Nijmegen died Friday morning following a serious accident on the Daalseweg in Nijmegen, the police reported. The man, riding a moped, collided with a cyclist shortly before 11:00 a.m., causing him to fall onto the road.
At that moment, a city bus was passing by and was unable to avoid him, tragically running over the man. Emergency responders performed CPR at the scene before rushing him to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The cyclist was unharmed.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. Both the cyclist and the bus driver were taken to the police station for further questioning. A police spokesperson confirmed multiple passengers were on the bus during the incident, but it is unclear if they will be interviewed as witnesses.
According to recent regional statistics, Nijmegen has seen an increase in accidents involving mopeds and cyclists over the past two years, prompting local authorities to review road safety measures. In Gelderland province, where Nijmegen is located, mopeds are involved in roughly 15 percent of all traffic accidents annually.
