Mayor of Wijk bij Duurstede steps down after sudden death of 19-year-old stepson

Iris Meerts has stepped down as mayor of Wijk bij Duurstede in Utrecht province following the sudden death of her 19-year-old stepson, De Telegraaf reports.

Meerts announced her decision on Instagram, stating she cannot adequately carry out her duties at the moment. “Under these circumstances, I am not able to properly fulfill my role as mayor of Wijk bij Duurstede,” she wrote. She has informed the commissioner of the King of her decision to step down.

Her stepson died “completely unexpectedly” on July 2. His farewell ceremony took place Friday in Rotterdam. “In the coming period, we will try to find a place for this immense loss, together with our children and everyone who has so lovingly gathered around us,” Meerts said.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Meerts would not be available for a second term as mayor. Her current term will end on December 16.
