Employees at Nidos, guardians of minor refugees, steal over €220,000 and are fired

Employees of the guardianship organization Nidos have committed fraud totaling more than 220,000 euros, demissionary Minister Mona Keijzer (Housing and Asylum) reported in a letter to the Tweede Kamer. The fraud allegedly included two instances where money was wrongly withdrawn using debit cards, De Telegraaf reports.

According to Minister Keijzer, the involved employees have been dismissed. In one case, the stolen money has already been recovered, while the outcome of the criminal investigation is still pending in the other case.

Keijzer noted that Nidos has implemented “adequate control measures” to address the issue. The organization has also established a special project group focused on structural solutions. Among the steps taken is reducing the use of cash to a minimum.

The minister made this report because the total fraud exceeded 100,000 euros, the threshold requiring such incidents to be officially disclosed. Nidos is responsible, among other tasks, for guardianship of minor refugees.
