Temps up to 34 degrees in Netherlands this weekend; Many events canceled or adapted

The Netherlands is in for hot weather this weekend, with maximums climbing to 33 degrees on Saturday and even 34 degrees on Sunday. As a result, many events in the country have been canceled or adapted to keep attendees safe in the heat.

Amsterdam is taking extra measures at the Op de Ring festival on the A10 ring road on Saturday, celebrating the city’s 750th anniversary. Because asphalt retains heat, the temperature above the road surface can rise considerably. The city reduced the number of tickets for the festival from 280,000 to 253,000 and increased the number of first aid posts and water points.

Amsterdam also halved the distance for the running event that is part of the festival, AT5 reported. The organizers wanted to make sure that “all participants can run within the relatively cool part of the day.”

Several sporting events have been canceled, including the triathlon in Luttenburg on Sunday. It is irresponsible to expose participants to the expected heat, the organizers told RTV Oost. The Mar-athon in Sneek and the TT Marathon and TT City Run in Assen on Saturday have also been canceled.

The heat also has consequences for music events. The Philzuid symphony orchestra canceled concerts in Eindhoven, Omroep Brabant reports. The Brass Band Festival in Orvelte in Drenthe will also not take place. “We have canceled it. The musicians play in uniforms, and that is really too hot,” the organizers told RTV Drenthe. “Moreover, in some places, they are sitting in the full sun. You can’t do that to the audience.”

Other events have been adapted. The Jordaan in de Polder music event in Lelystad has a heat protocol in place, including extra water points and space at the first aid post where people can cool down, NOS reported.

The organizers of the Theaterfestival Tweetakt in Utrecht placed parasols in the stands for spectators and will hand out water and sunscreen. A street festival in the center of the city will also hand out water, the organizers told RTV Utrecht. “And for those who want it: water pistols are ready.”

This weekend will truly feel like high summer in the Netherlands, according to Weeronline. The days will be sun-filled and dry, with some thunderstorms arriving on Sunday. Maximums on Friday will range between 20 and 27 degrees, north to south.

On Saturday, most of the country will hit tropical values of 30 degrees or higher. Only the northern coastal area might not hit 30, with maximums ranging between 25 and 29 there. The south will see thermometers climb to 32 or 33 degrees, and the rest of the country will be around 30 or 31 degrees. The sun will shine the whole day, and a weak to moderate easterly wind will provide little relief.

Sunday will be even hotter inland, with temperatures climbing to between 31 and 34 degrees. The western coastal provinces will likely hover just below 30 degrees. The day will be sunny, but there is a chance of thunderstorms in the evening.
