Amsterdam police arrest homeless man with €13,400 cash, including €1,900 in small change
The Amsterdam police arrested a homeless man for public urination this week, only to discover the man had 13,400 euros in cash on him, including over 1,900 euros in small change. The police suspect the American man of money laundering. He has since been deported to the United States, the police said on Instagram.
The police tracked down the homeless man after a complaint from a local on Herengracht that a “wandering man” used his building as a toilet at least once a day. They found the man sleeping on a bench. He had “no roof over his head, no clean clothes, and had not showered for a long time,” the police said.
The man could not identify himself, so the police took him to the station and discovered that he had several wallets with him that were “filled to the brim.” The man could not explain where he got the money or why he had it, so the police arrested him for money laundering.
The man turned out to be American and a “removable alien” - someone who is in the Netherlands undocumented or whose residency permit has expired. The police seized the cash, and the man was deported to the United States. “The state paid for the plane ticket to America,” the police said.
