Heineken announces $2.8 billion expansion in Mexico, will build brewery in Yucatán
Dutch beer producer Heineken announced Wednesday that it plans to invest 2.8 billion U.S. dollars (about 2.6 billion euros) in a range of projects across Mexico, according to Oriol Bonaclocha, head of the company’s Mexican division.
Part of the investment will go toward building a new brewery in the southeastern state of Yucatán. The plant will initially have an annual production capacity of 4 million hectoliters of beer.
That output could eventually double, depending on Heineken’s needs, Bonaclocha said. The company has not disclosed how the full 2.8 billion U.S. dollars will be allocated beyond the Yucatán site.
Heineken’s announcement comes two months after Grupo Modelo said it would invest more than 3.6 billion U.S. dollars (roughly 3.3 billion euros) in Mexico. Grupo Modelo produces several Mexican beer brands, as well as the international brand Corona.
