Leiden to apologize for role in colonialism and slave trade after university study
Leiden’s city government is preparing to formally apologize for the city’s role in colonialism and the slave trade, AD reports. This decision follows a scientific study conducted by Leiden University that uncovered strong ties between the city and its residents to colonial exploitation and slavery.
The research highlighted Leiden’s deep historical involvement in the transatlantic slave trade and colonial activities. Mayor Peter Heijkoop stressed the need for recognition and concrete measures, saying the city must confront and address this legacy.
To further this effort, the municipality will establish a think tank aimed at increasing knowledge and awareness of Leiden’s colonial past among residents. In addition, an advisory committee will be formed to evaluate and recommend public artworks that reflect the pain and history linked to slavery.
The city also plans to commission follow-up research to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of residents of color and how the legacy of slavery continues to affect the community today.
