Police shot one of two men killed in Hoofddorp during violent incident at home

One of the two men who died during a violent incident inside a home on Fanny Blankers-Koenlaan in Hoofddorp was shot and killed by a police officer, the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (OM) confirmed Monday afternoon. The other man died from stab wounds, RTL reports. Police first said that both men died from stab wounds.

The fatal incident occurred in the early morning of Wednesday, May 21. Both deceased men were residents of Hoofddorp and aged 21 and 22. Police received an emergency call at 6:05 a.m. reporting a fight in a residence. Upon arrival, officers encountered a stabbing in progress. Shots were fired by police at the scene, and two officers were injured during the confrontation. One photo from the scene showed a police car covered in blood.

Following the shooting, the Rijksrecherche—an independent investigative unit responsible for reviewing incidents involving law enforcement officers—launched an inquiry. A police firearm had been discharged, making the investigation mandatory under Dutch law.

The deadly violence shocked the neighborhood. According to the municipality, local residents and shopkeepers were visibly shaken. On Thursday, Marianne Schuurmans, mayor of Haarlemmermeer, which includes Hoofddorp, visited the area to speak with community members and business owners.

“They told me they were especially devastated for those involved and for the injured police officers,” Schuurmans said in a statement. “I was moved by the shopkeepers who opened their stores to provide shelter to residents and passersby. I want to sincerely thank them for that.”
