Dutch diver dies during recovery of sunken superyacht off Sicily

A Dutch diver working on the recovery of the superyacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily has died, according to the Italian news agency ANSA, as reported by NOS. The 39-year-old man, employed by a Dutch salvage company, was involved in efforts to recover the yacht, which sank last year.

The cause of death remains unclear, but initial reports indicate that the diver showed no signs of injury or burns. It is speculated that the man may have fallen ill while diving. His body was transported to the Porticello harbor for further examination.

Two Dutch companies are involved in the salvage operation of the Bayesian. The luxury yacht, owned by British tech billionaire Mike Lynch, sank last year off the eastern coast of Palermo. The yacht had been anchored when a severe storm hit, resulting in the deaths of seven of the 22 people on board, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter.

The cause of the yacht's sinking remains a mystery, as the vessel was designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. Three crew members of the Bayesian are under investigation in Italy for manslaughter and causing a maritime disaster, including Captain James Cutfield. Authorities have stated that the investigation into the incident can only be completed once the yacht has been fully recovered.
