Dutch cyclist claims overall victory in women’s multi-stage race in Spain
Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering won the Vuelta Femenina for the second consecutive year on Saturday, securing her overall lead in the final stage of the week-long Spanish women’s cycling race, according to Trouw.
The Vuelta Femenina, part of the UCI Women’s WorldTour, spans multiple stages across Spain, featuring several mountain finishes. The seventh and final stage covered a 152-kilometer route that ended at Alto de Cotobello in Asturias, with more than 2,500 meters of climbing, making it the race's most challenging.
Vollering finished the stage 11 seconds ahead of Swiss cyclist Marlen Reusser, while Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen placed third, 25 seconds behind. Vollering won the general classification with a 1-minute and 1-second lead over Reusser and 1 minute and 16 seconds over Van der Breggen.
Vollering claimed the race lead in the fifth stage, a mountain finish to Lagunas de Neila, where she soloed to victory. She entered the final stage with a 45-second advantage over both Van der Breggen and Reusser.
Van der Breggen, 35, made her return to the peloton this season and finished on the podium in her first major tour since her comeback.
