Leaders from the aviation sector call for urgent implementation of sustainable policies

A group of over 20 people with leading functions in the aviation sector is calling on the sector to start working on more sustainability policies urgently. Directors, pilots, and technicians have said to be concerned that the “aviation sector is risking its own future if it does not undergo a fundamental transition.”

The group, which named itself Call Aviation to Action, thinks it is impossible to continue the current course. At least 22 people have joined the group, and they are expecting more people to join in support of this message.

Call Aviation to Action added that the sector has to reduce emissions and support laws and regulations that would slow down emissions. The action group also thinks that aviation sector should not be completely dependent on technologies of which it is not certain yet that they contribute to more sustainability. “Be realistic about the timeline in which technology can offer a contribution, and develop a business model that can function independently and sustainably.”

Former director of sustainability at KLM, Karel Bockstael, is one of the initiators of the call to action. “The aviation sector must take the initiative for transformation before it is forced upon it,” he said. “We understand the challenges that companies and their directors face like no other, but we also see that continuing down this road is not an option.”

Greenpeace called it an “incredibly powerful signal” that even people from the aviation sector are now calling for action. “For years, we have pointed out the disastrous course that the aviation sector has on the climate,” said aviation expert Wouter Lemm. “False promises about technology and greenwashing cannot mask the increase in emissions. It is time for real choices: less flying, honest policies, and real climate measures.”
