Stores for handing in plastic bottles and cans to open soon in Rotterdam and Amsterdam

Statiegeld Nederland will open two stores this month where consumers can hand in their plastic drinking bottles or cans. They will then receive money for these directly, with cash payments also being an option. The first Statiegeld Retourshop will open on May 9 in the Keizerswaard shopping center in Rotterdam. Visitors will also be able to visit a store on the Vijzelgracht in Amsterdam from May 14.

“In an ideal world, consumers would be able to hand in their bottles and cans at the place they bought them, but this is not the case at the moment. There is no legal obligation for stores to receive plastic bottles or cans,” Statiegeld Nederland director Jeroen Hillier explained. “That is why we are taking initiative now.”

Hillien emphasized the importance of the ease with which someone can hand in the items and is pleading for an increase in locations that offer this in the Netherlands. “We are working hard on this, and we will continue to look for creative, accessible ways to recycle plastic bottles or cans. Because every bottle and can that we receive is one that we can recycle and use for new bottles and cans.”

In addition to cash payments, visitors will also be given the opportunity to donate the money or have the money transferred to them via the Tikkie app.
