MP's want measures against China dumping products on Dutch market
Many parties in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, want the Cabinet to take measures to prevent the dumping of goods from China. The trade war with the United States has led to concerns that Chinese companies will bring the products that they cannot sell onto the market in Europe at low prices.
Partij voor de Dieren MP Christine Teunissen said during a parliament debate about the US trade tariffs that she is concerned that a larger supply of cheap Chinese products will lead to more unfair competition for European companies. She also added that it could undermine the standards that exist within Europe regarding quality and sustainability.
Teunissen wants the Cabinet to take protective measures, like the registration of goods that are suspected of dumping, extra custom controls, and stricter enforcement.
She is expecting a majority in parliament to support her proposition. The proposal is already supported by the co-submitters GroenLinks-PvdA, D66, BBB, CDA, SGP, ChristenUnie, and Volt.
It was reported in March that people in the Netherlands ordered more items from foreign webshops last year, with Chinese webshops being among the most popular companies to order from. It was the first time that China topped the list for foreign countries with the most online orders from people in the Netherlands.
