Prosecutors seek four-year sentence for man accused of online sexual abuse of minors
A 43-year-old man from Zeewolde is facing a four-year prison sentence, including one year suspended, for allegedly sexually exploiting multiple underage girls online. Prosecutors described his actions as "disgusting and grossly sexual in nature" during a hearing Friday in the Lelystad court, calling his behavior obsessive. The defendant has admitted to all charges, Omroep Flevoland reports.
The youngest victim was 10 years old when she came into contact with the suspect through Snapchat. Using a chat name that included a smiling emoji with sunglasses, he initiated conversations that quickly turned sexual. He allegedly pressured the girl to send explicit photos of herself while he sent her sexually explicit images and videos of himself.
Prosecutors detailed how the man manipulated victims into engaging in sexual acts during video calls, which he recorded and saved. He also attempted to arrange in-person meetings with at least one girl at a playground near her home.
His actions came to light in June 2024 when the mother of one victim discovered their conversations and contacted police. Investigators traced the chats back to the suspect and subsequently arrested him. A search of his phone revealed extensive evidence, including 5,000 chat messages, with at least 26 exchanges involving minors. Authorities also discovered child pornography and even bestiality content in his possession.
The court heard testimony from a 14-year-old victim who described how the suspect coerced her into performing sexual acts on camera. "He said I had to keep my promises," she recounted. Although he urged her to meet him in person, no physical encounter occurred.
Three additional victims, aged 14 and 15, also had online interactions with the suspect between July 2023 and June 2024, exchanging explicit photos and videos. Prosecutors suspect there are more victims, as additional pornographic material was found, but some files could not be traced back to specific individuals.
Prosecutors described the explicit content as particularly distressing. "One video shows a pink stuffed animal on a girl's bed before she engages in extremely graphic sexual acts. The contrast is deeply disturbing," the prosecutor stated.
During the hearing, the suspect expressed remorse, saying, "I wanted attention and validation. It was easier with younger women. Over time, boundaries blurred, and I ended up interacting with minors, sometimes without initially realizing their age." However, he denied having a sexual preference for children or teenagers.
Psychological evaluations concluded that he does not have pedophilic tendencies or other sexual disorders but does suffer from borderline personality disorder and narcissistic traits. Experts linked his behavior to a history of bullying, which reportedly left him with low self-esteem and a constant sense of emptiness, driving him to seek extreme stimulation. He has been deemed partially accountable for his actions.
