Body found in search for Chinese student in Amsterdam; police yet to identify
A body has been found in the search for the Chinese student Shengmen Luo. The body was found in the water by the Nieuwe Meer in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the body. They are also still investigating the cause of death.
The body was discovered at 11 a.m. near De Oeverlanden park. The area has now been closed off to ensure that police can complete their investigation in peace.
Luo has been missing since February 23. He is a student at the University of Amsterdam. The 23-year-old was last seen in a student flat on the Poeldijkstraat in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. His laptop, passport, and phone were still in the flat and his bank cards have not been used since that time.
Police began their search for Luo in the area last Friday. Boats and dogs were used during the search. Police said at the time that they were looking for a black bike in the nearby area.
Luo’s family arrived in the Netherlands last weekend after the university’s attempts to contact the family were unsuccessful due to false phone numbers. The university notified the police on March 1 after they realized that Luo was not on holiday in China.
Luo is doing his Master’s degree in Logics at the Faculty of Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science at the Science Park.
The police have urged anybody with any information about the disappearance of the Chinese student or anyone who has seen something in the area to contact the police.
