The Hague teacher arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting child at primary school

A 28-year-old teacher at a primary school in The Hague was arrested Friday morning on suspicion of sexually assaulting a pupil, the police announced later in the day. The case stems from a report claiming he acted egregiously in early February. The investigation that followed led to the decision to press charges against the man.

The suspect was teaching at the Annie MG Schmidtschool, and he is a resident of The Hague. The police could not say on Friday whether more students at the Statenkwartier school may have been victims.

He taught primary school students in group eight, meaning the students in his class were likely around 11 years of age. On Thursday, the education foundation De Haagse Scholen announced that the teacher had just been fired for inappropriate behavior.

The spokesperson for the organization said that one or more parents filed a complaint against the teacher. Police and the Public Prosecution Service were still investigating the case on Friday to determine precisely what happened, and how the teacher may be involved.

“The suspect will be brought before the examining magistrate on Monday,” police said. He can then me remanded to jail for up to 14 days while the investigation continues. This can be extended by the district court for periods of up to 90 days at a time from the date of the suspect’s arraignment.
