Veldkamp stands firm on Ukraine support despite Wilders' criticism

Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Caspar Veldkamp affirmed that the Netherlands will continue its support for Ukraine as outlined in coalition agreements, despite recent comments from PVV leader Geert Wilders questioning the level of assistance.

In an appearance on the Café Kockelmann television program, Veldkamp responded to Wilders' statement earlier this week that the Netherlands should reduce its aid to Ukraine. Wilders had argued that people should be allowed to keep more money in their pockets, suggesting that support for Ukraine could be scaled back if necessary.

Veldkamp made it clear that Wilders' position did not change the coalition's commitment. "I see this as introductory fire for the discussion around the voorjaarsnota," referring to the upcoming spring budget debate.

The minister cited the coalition agreement, which includes a commitment from the PVV, VVD, NSC, and BBB parties to continue political, military, financial, and moral support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. "The agreement is clear: the Netherlands will continue to support Ukraine," Veldkamp emphasized. He also reiterated that the government’s program specifically states that support for Ukraine will remain "unwavering." "I am executing the government program," Veldkamp concluded.
