Almere mayor declares safety risk area following a string of explosions

Mayor Hein van der Loo has designated the John Raedeckerstraat area in Almere as a safety risk zone after a series of explosions. The decision grants police broader powers to conduct preventative searches and vehicle inspections to detect weapons and explosives.

The safety risk designation will remain in effect until Monday, January 20, at 9:30 p.m. Residents have been informed of the measure. Authorities hope the increased policing and preventive actions will help stabilize the situation and prevent further incidents.

The announcement follows three explosions this week at the same house on the street. The incidents occurred after a police arrest on Monday, though authorities have not disclosed details about the individual detained.

Prior to declaring the area a safety risk zone, the mayor ordered the closure of a residence on the street, implemented surveillance cameras, and imposed area bans on several individuals.

Mayor Van der Loo said the recent explosions have caused significant disruption in the community. "The consecutive explosions of the past week have had a major impact on the area. I am now compelled to declare a safety risk zone. These extraordinary events require decisive measures. Restoring the residents' sense of security is my top priority," he said in a statement.
