FC Utrecht agree deal for the return of former striker Sebastien Haller on loan
Ivory Coast striker Sebastien Haller is going to rejoin FC Utrecht. The striker, who played for Utrecht from 2015 to 2017, will leave his current club Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the season in May, Voetbal International reported.
Haller was very successful in his first period at the club, scoring 41 goals in 82 matches. This led to him being sold to German club Eintracht Frankfurt for seven million euros. He eventually ended up at another Eredivisie club in Ajax, where he won the Dutch top-flight division, the Eredivisie, twice, and the KNVB Cup.
The deal was pushed through by Haller’s willingness to join Ron Jans’ side. The striker told his club, Borussia Dortmund, that he wanted to rediscover his love for football and felt FC Utrecht was the place to do it. Haller has spent the last six months on loan at Spanish club Leganes.
Haller experienced a fairytale moment in 2024. He scored the winning goal in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations for the Ivory Coast after he had survived a battle with testicular cancer in 2022.
Utrecht is enjoying a terrific season. They are currently in third place with only a three-point gap to Ajax, who are in a spot that qualifies a team directly for the UEFA Champions League.
The team’s first match back after the winter break is a tough one. They travel to Feyenoord on Sunday. The Rotterdammers are just one point from Utrecht in the Eredivisie league table.
