19-year-old suspect in Purmerend explosion to remain in custody
A 19-year-old man suspected of involvement in a devastating explosion on Maasstraat in Purmerend will remain in custody, the Noord-Holland court announced Tuesday. The decision was made during the suspect's arraignment before the examining magistrate.
The explosion occurred during the night of Dec. 14 to Dec. 15, severely injuring a 16-year-old boy and triggering a fire that forced the evacuation of six homes. The injured teenager, identified as Joey, was sleeping in the attic of the affected house when the explosion occurred. Trapped by flames, he was forced to jump through a wall of fire to escape. Joey remains hospitalized in critical condition with severe burns.
The police have detained two suspects in connection with the incident. The 19-year-old suspect, described as the main perpetrator, is accused of direct involvement in the explosion. He is currently being held in pretrial detention.
A second suspect, a 20-year-old man also from Purmerend, was arrested on suspicion of planning a retaliatory attack. Following a police investigation, the 20-year-old was released but remains a suspect. Authorities have not disclosed details about the alleged planned retaliation or the motives behind the explosion.
The blast caused a large fire that completely destroyed several homes and displaced multiple families. Residents from four other homes were rendered homeless as a result of the fire.
Neighbors have described the aftermath as chaotic and devastating, with flames engulfing the block and emergency services working tirelessly to evacuate residents. One witness reported seeing Joey leap from the top floor of his home, surrounded by flames, as bystanders rushed to help.
