Full cafes are expected during Oranje match, but with limited extra turnover
The cafes geared towards the Netherlands' European Championship matches are expected to be completely full during the game against Turkey on Saturday. This was already more or less the case during the other matches that Oranje played in the tournament, but the growing importance of the match and the favorable time slot of Saturday at 9 p.m. is expected to result in the cafes being even busier. This was said by ANP reporters who had spoken to several cafe owners.
These cafes are usually quite full on Saturday nights either way. This new Oranje party will not lead to that much extra income for the cafes, the 't Neutje from Utrecht and Samson in Nijmegen expect.
"Last Tuesday (against Romania), there certainly was extra turnover during the match. But before and after the match, it was quiet again, so it wasn't even that much of a difference on balance. And it is always busy on a Saturday, so I am not expecting too much added turnover," t'Neutje owner Eddy Schouten explained.
The Drie Gezusters in Groningen expects around 2,800 people for the match, just like on a regular Saturday. "And full is full. So if you ask me whether I would rather have had this match be on Tuesday, then the answer is, of course, yes," said general manager Norbert van Ommen van Guijlik, who has turned the first floor of his establishment into an 'Oranje shack.' "Completely in Orange with beer tables and music. I expect people to get her nice and early, eat something, and that we then make it one big party."
Mooie Boules, the company behind five bars mainly aimed at the game jeu de boules, is expected additional turnover due to showing the match against Turkey. The branches in Amsterdam, Delft, Haarlem, Eindhoven, and Rotterdam are expected to be full with a total of 4,000 compared to the 2,500 people that came to the cafes for the Romania match. "We are expecting the busiest Euro 2024 night thus far," said the company.
For O'Casey's Irish pub in The Hague, the European Championships and World Cups are the "cherry on the pie" regarding turnover. "As an international pub, we are completely full from day one. It does not matter which country it is always busy. Of course, when the Netherlands plays, it is a real madhouse, and the roof comes off with approximately 350 people inside. We will already be full on Saturday at 6 p.m. for England - Switzerland and then full again for the Netherlands," owner John Gulay said.
