Scoof I Cabinet will have three new Ministries
The Schoof I Cabinet will have three new Ministries, according to the distribution of ministerial posts shared by the Cabinet Formation Spokesperson Office on Wednesday. The new ones are the Ministry of Asylum and Migration (PVV), the Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning (BBB), and the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth (VVD).
Dutch Cabinet positions where an individual is a "Minister of..." refer to a role where the figure oversees an entire Ministry, while a "Minister for..." is responsible for a specific policy portfolio within another Ministry. This individual is still considered a Minister and has a position more senior to the State Secretaries.
It was previously assumed that the three new Ministries would be “Minster for” positions. The fact that they are three entirely new Ministries is remarkable given that the PVV, VVD, NSC, and BBB coalition also plans to make major cuts in the civil service. Setting up a new Ministry costs money and civil servants.
Other changes include a new State Secretary of Groningen Recovery, falling under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations. The current Cabinet’s Minister for Legal Protection will become a State Secretary position under the Ministry of Justice and Security. The same is true for the Minister for Primary- and Secondary Education, turning into a State Secretary of Primary- and Secondary Education and Emancipation.
There will be a State Secretary of Public Transport and Environment under the Ministry of Infrastructure. And a State Secretary of Participation and Integration under the Ministry of Social Affairs. And the Public Health Ministry gets two State Secretaries, one for Longterm- and Social Care, and one of Youth, Prevention, and Sport
Formateur Richard van Zwol today started his one-on-one meetings with the candidates for the ministerial posts, starting with candidate Prime Minister Dick Schoof.
