A 36-year-old driver without a driver's license was arrested after he caused a dangerous situation in Tilburg on Thursday following a car chase with the police, the police reported. The man drove at a high speed along a bicycle path before crashing into a tree and a house.
The police stated that an officer spotted the driver on the Besterdring around 11:15 a.m. on Thursday as he was using his mobile phone. The officer attempted to pull him over, but the driver disregarded the stop signal and drove away. He continued onto the Veldhovenring and then to Goirkestraat. He then veered into a cycle path. h The vehicle then crashed into a tree and a house, and eventually flipped over.
After the crash, the driver attempted to flee on foot but was rapidly arrested by the police. "It turns out that he did not possess a driver's license, and a preliminary saliva test indicated drug use," the police reported. A blood sample was taken at the police station for further tests. The driver is currently detained for questioning.
Camera footage shows that two cyclists narrowly managed to jump out of the way. One of them spoke to Omroep Brabant. “It's a miracle that I'm still alive,” he told the local broadcaster.
“He was driving towards me at a speed of at least 70 or 80 on the cycle path,” he added. “I barely managed to jump off my bike and press myself against the facade. He just grazed my bike. Further ahead, he crashed into a tree and a facade and then flipped over,” he said.
