Body found after explosion, fire in Haarlem flat

Firefighters found the body of a person in a Haarlem apartment after a fire in the flat on Wednesday night, local safety office Veiligheidsregio Kennemerland confirmed on Twitter. The cause of the fire and the victim's identity are not yet known.

The fire broke out on the second floor of the apartment building on Rudolf Steinerstraat just before 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, according to AD. A spokesperson for the Haarlem fire department told the newspaper that there was an explosion before the fire.

The fire department evacuated the building. The residents of 48 apartments had to leave their homes while firefighters extinguished the fire. The fire was under control just after midnight, after which most of the evacuated residents were allowed back into their homes. The resident of eight apartments had to spend the night elsewhere, local media reports.

The cause of the fire is still unclear. The police are investigating.
