Police investigating death of elderly woman, 78

The police are investigating the death of a 78-year-old woman in her apartment in Oostkapelle on Friday. Initial investigation revealed that the woman was likely killed in a crime, the police said in a statement on Monday evening.

The victim was found seriously injured in the apartment on Veldzigt at around 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Emergency services tried in vain to save her life. She died at the scene.

"Because it seemed to be a non-natural death, colleagues from the investigation department came to the scene and an investigation was started", the police said. Over the weekend, investigations were performed in and around the woman's home.

On Monday the police also investigated an underground waste container at the apartment building, according to NU.nl. A waste company lifted the container to the surface and the contents were placed in a transport truck, which took it to an area in the municipality of Veere for investigation, according to the newspaper.

Exactly what happened to the victim in her apartment, the police can not yet say. So far no arrests were made.
