Woman, 23, killed in Groningen village; man arrested

A 23-year-old woman died in a home on Van der Munniklaan in the Groningen village of Lees early on Thursday morning. The 30-year-old male resident was arrested on suspicion of involvement in her death. He was taken to a police station for questioning, RTV Noord reports.

Paramedics responded to the home and found the woman seriously injured. Attempts to save her life were to no avail. She died at the scene. The man called the ambulance. The paramedics called the police when they found out it involved a violent incident, according to the local broadcaster.

"At first there was only an ambulance, but a few minutes later the police arrived. Then I noticed something was wrong", neighbor Boelo Lubbers said to RTV Noord. "The police walked in and out, some time later the neighbor was brought to a police car with his hands behind his back."

A family with two young children of foreign origin live in the home, Lubbers said to the broadcaster. "Very social, nice people. They always waved and greeted, a very normal family."

Another neighbor, Wouter Korhorn, occasionally helped the family with chores or the language. "This is quite a shock, I don't understand any of it", he said.
