Amsterdam to build another 10,500 homes for students, young people
Up until 2022 another 10,500 homes and rooms will be built for students and young people in Amsterdam and surrounding region - 9 thousand in Amsterdam and 1,500 in the surrounding municipalities, the city of Amsterdam announced.
According to the Amsterdam municipality, there are still too many young people who fall victim to the shortage on the housing market and the resulting high prices. "It is very necessary to build more affordable housing for young people and students", said Laurens Ivens, Amsterdam alderman for Housing. "They are now increasingly forced to stay at home or search for an affordable home for a long time, while they should actually have time to build their lives in Amsterdam."
The new homes will be built by housing corporations and developers. It involves both fully equipped homes, and homes and rooms with shared facilities. The most important demand for the municipality is that the rents be affordable. Where the municipality of Amsterdam is the landowner, the maximum rent will be 424 euros per month for young people between the ages of 18 and 23 years, and 607 euros per month for 23 to 28 year olds.
Amsterdam will also pay extra attention to acceptable and affordable service fees. The municipality will talk to developers about an acceptable amount and transparency about these costs.
