Large Dutch delegation at Climate Summit in Poland
World leaders and scientists from almost al countries in the world are gathering in Katowice, Poland for an international climate summit. Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Ministers Eric Wiebes of Economic Affairs and Climate, Sigrid Kaag of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen of Infrastructure and Water Management, and State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven of Infrastructure will represent the Netherlands, the Telegraaf reports.
The summit starts on Monday and will end on December 14th. The goal is to work out concrete measures for lowering greenhouse gas emissions as much and quickly as possible, in order to achieve the targets set in the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015.
During the Paris climate summit in 2015 leaders representing a large part of the world agreed to limit global warming to no more than 2 degrees Celsius compared to the era before industrialization, but preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Even if global warming is limited to 1.5 degrees, climate change will still have major consequences such as the rising of the sea levels and more extreme weather, scientists warn.
