Cop's son killed by police officer in coffee shop incident

An 18-year-old man who died from a gunshot wound at a hospital last month was killed by a police officer, the Public Prosecutor (OM) announced on Friday. The teenager, also the son of a police officer, was one of two people shot at by police outside a Delft coffees hop early on October 8.

Forensic research into the Breestraat shooting is still underway, but the OM is convinced that the teen was shot by the cop. So far, witnesses were interviewed, security images were reviewed, and telephonic data has been analyzed.

The case will be investigated further due to the police-involved death. Authorities will seek to determine the quality of the responding officer's performance, and will determine if a conflict of interest led to the death of another officer's son.

On that fateful October night, the Zoetermeer teen allegedly pointed what looked like a firearm at a coffee shop there. The coffee shop was the subject of prior attacks, and the officer involved in the shooting was stationed at the location as a security measure.

The suspects fled on a scooter, the OM said, but the teen showed up at a hospital in his hometown with the injury. He later died at that hospital.
