Amsterdam woman, daughter killed in Syria bombardment: report

Amsterdam woman Sarah L. and her young daughter were killed in a bombardment in the Syrian town of Hajin, near the border with Iraq, on Friday, sources around the woman's family confirmed to Het Parool. L. went to Syria in 2014.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a few dozen people were killed in the bombardment. L. lived in an apartment complex where other families also lived.

A Dutch woman who lives in the Syrian neighborhood informed L.'s mother that her daughter and grandchild were killed, according to the newspaper. That was later confirmed by other sources in Syria.

Sarah L. is the sister of Bilal L., who was sentenced to three years in prison in 2006 for recruiting fellow prisoners for the armed struggle in Syria, according to Het Parool. He was later used by the Amsterdam municipality to discourage other young people from going to join the Syrian Civil War. After controversy arose about Amsterdam's deradicalization approach, the municipality halted it.
