Sailor in Scheveningen fatal boating accident arrested

One of two sailors involved in a fatal collision between a fast rubber dinghy and a motorboat in the port of Scheveningen on Thursday, was arrested. The other skipper was injured and is in hospital. He will be questioned at a later time, the police said, NU.nl reports.

The sailor was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the fatal accident. His arrest is a common procedure in this type of case, a police spokesperson said to NU.nl. The police are investigating the involvement of both sailors in the accident, and how the accident happened. The detained sailor was given a breathalyzer test and it showed that he was not under the influence of alcohol.

A 56-year-old man from the municipality of Noordenveld in Drenthe was killed in the accident. Three others were injured, including one seriously.

Many people witnessed the accident, as festivities to celebrate the Volvo Ocean Race was happening in the port at the time.
