Abuse case claims man forced naked woman to wear 'whore' sign in public

The Public Prosecutor demanded 18 months in prison against a 32-year-old man from Arnhem accused of abusing and humiliating his girlfriend. He forced the severely bruised and practically naked woman to stand on a Hoogeveen street with a sign reading 'whore' around her neck, was revealed in court on Tuesday, NOS reports.

The incident happened in July 2014, in front of the woman's apartment building in Hoogeveen. The woman was wearing only her panties. A neighbor called the police after spotting the bruised and shaking woman.

The suspect told the police that the woman had fallen down the stairs. A police officer decided to talk to the woman alone, and she told him that her boyfriend had been systematically abusing her for a month. At that time the couple had been together for three months. The woman had 43 injuries on her body, including a broken vertebra.

In court on Tuesday, the Public Prosecutor called what was done to the woman "extremely humiliating".

The suspect told the court that a neighbor was the one who had beaten his ex. He also said that he made her stand naked on the street with the sign because she cheated on him with this same neighbor. "Women who cheat must be punished", he told the court.

The man already has a list of convictions against his name and is currently serving a two year prison sentence for another crime. In his own words, he has spent half his life in jail, mostly for thefts.

The reason this trial is happening only four years after the crime, is because the man changed lawyers three times. He refused to cooperate with psychological examination.
