Explosion destroys home in Gelderland village

The Gelderland village of Vaassen was woken by a massive explosion early on Wednesday morning. The explosion and subsequent fire completely destroyed the home on Kerkweg where it happened, RTL Nieuws reports.

Surprisingly, no one was injured. The three residents of the home managed to get out unharmed.

The explosion and fire happened around 3:30 a.m., according to Omroep Gelderland. By 5:00 a.m. firefighters had the fire under control. The explosion also damaged some surrounding homes, where windows did not survive the blast.

"The fire department commander lives 800 meters away and sat straight up in bed when he heard the bang. He thought it was an ATM bombing", a spokesperson for the local safety office said to RTL. "It was a massive bang."

The cause of the explosion is still unclear, the police are investigating.
