Amstelveen jeweler suspected of staging robbery

A 50-year-old jeweler from Astelveen is suspected of staging a robbery at his jewelry store so that he could submit an insurance claim. The items claimed stolen from his jewelry store were insured for several million euros, ANP reports.

The jeweler was arrested last week on suspicion of fraud. He will stay in custody for at least the next two weeks, the court in Amsterdam ruled on Monday.

According to the jeweler, he was robbed on November 9th last week and briefly held hostage - the robbers locked him in a vault before robbing his store and fleeing with several million euros worth of items. Earlier this month the police arrested three people on suspicion of robbing te jewelry store. The suspects are two men from Houten and Rotterdam and a woman from Huizen.

The man's insurance company, which already paid a large part of the damages, is filing fraud charges against him.
