Schiphol tunnel repairs: Four lanes open for Friday morning rush hour
Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat opened four of Schiphol tunnel's six lanes for Friday morning rush hour. Schiphol Airport can now also be reached directly via a turn immediately after the tunnel, NOS reports.
The tunnel has been mostly closed since a fire broke out in an electrical box in the corridor next to the tunnel on Monday afternoon. Over 70 cables were damaged, putting the lighting, ventilation and cameras out of order. The tunnel direction Amsterdam to The Hague was closed while the damaged cables were repaired.
On Wednesday and Thursday Rijkswaterstaat opened two lanes in the tunnel. On Thursday night the entire tunnel was closed again. Because equipment tests in the tunnel went well on Thursday night, Rijkswaterstaat decided to open four lanes on Friday morning. It is expected that by Monday morning, the entire tunnel will be open again.
