School board to investigate Sri Lankan teen's suicide

School organization LVO Parkstad is launching a full investigation into the suicide of 15-year-old student Tharukshan Selvam over the weekend, chairman of the organization Frank Schings said to 1Limburg.

The Heerlen boy attended the Grotius College, which falls under the school organization. He suffered bullying, harassment and racial abuse from fellow students, according to his family. It reached the point where fear of returning to school after the holidays resulted in his suicide.

His family posted about the suicide on Facebook on Tuesday. They blame the school and aid organizations for not doing enough against the bullying.

Schings would comment in detail, but did tell 1Limburg that "something was going on" with Tharukshan. "The general practitioner, care institutions and even the police were also involved in this", he said..

He believes the important thing now is to properly investigate the whole matter. "And the school is part of this Where we made mistakes, we will recognize them. We are also looking for an interpreter, so we can enter a discussion with the parents, who do not speak Dutch, as soon as possible", Schings said to the Limburg media.
