Two SWAT officers hurt in Spaarndam explosion

Two members of a police SWAT team were injured in an explosion in Spaarndam on Tuesday. One of them is in a serious condition, according to ANP.

The explosion happened around 6:30 p.m. on Inlaagpolder. The explosion happened in or near one of the team's cars. The two injured officers were near the car when it happened, a spokesperson for the police said to the news wire.

The spokesperson could not say exactly what happened or why the SWAT team was in Spaarndam.

Another police spokesperson told broadcaster NOS that SWAT teams mostly have explosives with them "Apparently something went wrong", the broadcaster quotes the spokesperson.

The area around the explosion was closed down for investigation.
