Two buildings on fire after Kerkdriel ATM bombing

An ATM bombing on Monseigneur Zwijsenplein in Kerkdriel around 4:00 a.m. on Monday morning left two buildings on fire. Surrounding buildings were evacuated.

According to Brabants Dagblad, the fire started in The Read Shop, a store that sells books and magazines, and then spread to the adjacent Kruidvat. The Hema is also filled with smoke. Firefighters managed to get the fire under control around 8:30 a.m. The Read Shop and Kruidvat sustained significant damage and can be considered lost.

A man was also assaulted and rushed to the hospital. It seems he caught the ATM bombers in the act and they attacked him before setting The Read Shop on fire. The victim is the owner of the store, the man's son and police confirmed to the newspaper.

As far as is known, no one was injured in the fire. Surrounding buildings were evacuated and dozens of residents are standing on the street. About 35 evacuated residents took shelter in the twn hall.

The stores on Monseigneur Zwijzenplein and in shopping center Delkant will likely remain closed on Monday.
