Fire that killed elderly couple was "crime of passion"

A series of fires set in Hellevoetsluis earlier this year, including one on Gruttostraat in which an elderly couple died, seem to be crimes of passion. The suspected arsonist, 48-year-old Evert R. of Spijkenisse, made his ex one of his victims and set the other fires out of jealousy, according to newspaper AD. It seems that R. targeted the Lampers family - his ex-girlfriend was dating one of the elderly couple's sons. There were five fires in a months time in Helelvoetsluis. The first two fires were in Asmusstraat - at the front door and shed of 59-year-old Lino Lampers. Two weeks later his parents Bram and Lucia Lampers, both 84, died in a house fire on Gruttostraat. Three days later there was a fire at the home of Lino's sister Margaret on Jan van Brakelpad. The final fire was on the step of R.'s ex-girlfriend's home. R. was arrested five days later. R. is in custody on suspicion of stalking, threats and four cases of arson. The Public Prosecutor also wants to charge him with the death of the elderly Lampers couple, but due to the complete destruction of their home, arson could not be proven yet. The arsonist will be appearing in court for the first time next month.
