Sports Min. promises support for retiring athletes
The Dutch government is working on a plan to support retiring athletes and help them find a new job, Minister Edith Schippers of Public Health, Welfare and Sports said in Rio de Janeiro, where the Summer Olympics are currently taking place, NOS reports. According to the Minister, she received a letter from judo athlete Henk Grol telling her that athletes often end up unemployed after their sports career ends. " 'What if an athlete leaves? How does he get a job in the normal life', he wrote to me. We will close that hole", Schippers said, according to the broadcaster. The plan will focus on helping a former athlete find a different job, helping them find their strengths and where they will have the most opportunity. Further details will only be announced later, after the plan was evaluated and presented to athletes.
