Some 15,000 chickens killed in Drenthe fire

A large fire at a farm in Orvelte, Drenthe killed some 15 thousand chickens during the early hours of Monday morning. No one else was injured, ANP reports. The fire started around 2:30 a.m. By the time the fire brigade arrived, two stables were ablaze to the point where they couldn't be saved. One of them contained the chickens. The fire was under control around 4:45 a.m. The heat was so intense that some high voltage cables over the farm snapped. Grid operator TennT is working to get the power off the cables so that the fire department can continue extinguishing the fire. Asbestos was released during the fire, but as there was almost no wind most of the asbestos particles just fell back to the ground, according to the fire department. The house on the farm was not touched by the fire.
